Here's a look at our Cheese crate production...the assembly of the 640 cheese box.
All sides of the box are made with plywood. The end pieces have two
1.25" holes drilled for the purpose of grading cheese. These are then banded
together to form the box and a plastic liner is placed inside.
Quality Control
Here, three 640 cheese boxes are taken to the Engineering Department
at Queen's University for load testing. Each box withstands a vertical
load of 9000lbs for 35 minutes with no evidence of distress of any sort.
Filling the 640 Cheese Box
The boxes are placed in line for filling and a plywood cover is placed
atop of the cheese. Eight springs are then postioned and covered with another
plywood section. A Galvanized steel frame completes the package for
banding, makng the box air tight.
Harrowsmith Manufacturing Company Ltd. has manufactured 12,500
cheese boxes for a major cheese making company in Ontario, Canada for the
past twelve years. The majority of these boxes are still in use today.
The picture below demonstrates how compact the storage is. Each box
contains 640 pounds of cheddar. The cheese is stored in these boxes for
up to five years.
Galvanized frames, top and bottom, ready for shipment.
The hot dip galvanizing process is characterized by a thick metallic
zinc envelope which completely covers the surface of the steel, thereby
creating a series of metallurgically bonded zinc-iron alloy layers.
The tightly adherent middle alloy layers are actually harder than the
steel core, providing a high level of resistance to mechanical damage in
addition to corrosion protection.
Plywood portions of the boxes shrink-wrapped for shipping.
We use only top quality Canadian plywood. Exterior grade, sanded fir
with water proof glue, 19 mm thick and good one side to ensure
an anti-snag surface for the plastic liner. The plywood is stacked on skids
and shrink-wrapped for protection and ease of shipment.
